Being someone who started strength training in the 70’s I see the stark contrast of people training today. Now more than ever people are distracted while they train. They are on their cell phones, watching tv, or talking to their friends while they’re working out. Most people have a mind that is always going, being distracted, multitasking, and unable to focus on only one thing and giving it their all. To get results in training, a total mind muscle connection and focus is necessary during the exercise. A person that trains needs to get into the exercise instead of escaping the exercise by distracting their mind with other things.
Arnold Schwarzenegger said that one repetition with total mind muscle connection was better than 10 repetitions with a scattered mind.
Training with flywheel is like using a yo-yo or dancing. It has a rhythm to it. In the concentric phase, the idea is to pull as hard as you can all the way to when the strap you pull or push, comes to its end. Since the shaft keeps moving it will pull the strap back again. The harder one pulls, the harder the strap pulls back. Just as when playing with a yo-yo, the harder you throw it the faster it comes back. In this way, there is constant tension on the muscle through each repetition and through the entire set. Just like dancing, you pull – the strap pulls you back, you pull – the strap pulls you back. This requires the individual to be engaged, present, and focused during the entire set to feel the rhythm.
As we stated earlier -that the total muscle activation with this training is like nothing we have ever seen, and the fact that the person that trains has to be in complete mind – muscle focus during the set is making this activation even greater.
