Creating a New Heavy Duty Flywheel Line of Equipment
After the initial 6 months of using flywheel training exclusively I had come to a dead end in my personal training. I had adapted to the maximum resistance the equipment allowed, and was not able to add more resistance and continue my progress, or the progress of the athletes I trained.
Out of nowhere, serendipity or divine design, appeared Joe Munich, who happens to be a masters lifetime bodybuilder. Joe is a member of the Club at Los Gatos where my HMT clinic and flywheel equipment is located. He was watching me through the glass wall of our flywheel gym when I was working out with the equipment, wondering what I was doing.
I introduced Joe to a flywheel work out and he was immediately sold. Never in his 45 years of bodybuilding training had he ever felt that kind of muscle activation and pump working out. On top of being someone who was a veteran expert in weight training and hypertrophy, Joe was also the owner and operator of High Speed cnc, a machine shop that makes parts for Silicon Valley aerospace companies. When I told him my problem – that my training had maxed out due to the fact that we couldn’t put any more resistance on the machines – he offered to retrofit the shafts to allow for more flywheels and make flywheels in solid steel of higher inertia and resistance.
With Joe’s expertise we were able to add significantly more resistance (adding more wheels, and wheels of greater mass), as well as rebuild regular weight training machines to flywheel machines. We are now able to isolate and train up to 50 different muscles, and reproduce almost all major strength training exercises with our flywheel equipment. In fact, the retrofit flywheel equipment by Eccentric Strength (the name of our project and company), handles more than 10 times more resistance than any of the other brand of flywheel equipment on the market. This allows for flywheel training to replace regular weight lifting for strength, explosiveness, and hypertrophy.
